Spotting a Dirty Sensor

Dirty sensors are usually rather easy to spot. They are most noticible in the sky in landscape scenes. However, you cannot see dirt on a sensor when looking through the finder of the camera. Any spots seen when looking through the finder of the camera will NOT show up on your images as these spots are most likely on the focusing screen, not the image sensor.

The image above is an extreme, but not uncommon example of what a dirty sensor can look like.

How to check if your sensor has been contaminated

  1. Set lens to infiniti focus. This elimnates the lens from being the cause of any of the spots.
  2. Stop down the lens to its minimum aperture. This will sharpen up any dust spots that might be on the sensor.
  3. Using manual or aperature priority exposure modes take a photograph of a plain white or neutral colored backdrop.
    • Note: Sometimes it helps to overexpose by 1/3-2/3rd stops (or more)to make the dust spots stand out depending on the background used.
  4. Review images full-size on the computer. For best results simply apply auto-levels in Photoshop.
  5. Bring your camera to Kamera Korner and get it cleaned!
